In this lesson, we use shape and color to design a cityscape or castle. When creating these structures out of our imagination we begin thinking about design of the composition and use of color and use of materials. The variety of materials and shapes creates interest with texture and design.
![]() Inspiration Paul Klee 1879-1940 Klee was a Swiss-born artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Klee was a draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory. He and his friend, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and musical expression.

In the first part of this lesson a landscape was created in the round. In a landscape the sky, horizon line, fore ground are important elements in the composition. In this lesson we will weave a free-form tree over the landscape. There are many choices in how to weave our tree. I demonstrate the weaving of the tree in the attached You Tube video.
This is part one of two of a planned project that involves landscape painting, then weaving. In this lesson we will focus on painting a landscape with elements of a landscape composition, which include; sky, horizon line, middle ground, and foreground. We look to the impressionist painter Claude Monet and his contemporary Vincent Van Gogh to two painting they painted as a landscape. In our painting we are not so concerned with the details but we need to include a sky, a horizon line, and foreground with hopefully a middle ground to create depth. In Mr. Monet's painting he uses color in a unique way with his trees almost purple or lilac in hue. In Vincent's painting not only are his colors vibrant but the texture is impressive. His texture suggests movement in a way smooth paint would not. There are many different approaches to creating a landscape, find one that you really are excited to practice and make.
