One of my favorite lesson I like to revisit celebrates Wisconsin born artist, Georgia O' Keeffe. Here is a student work by a first grader, my favorite flower the Bleeding Heart. I also like to share the space in which my young artists create.
Every spring I try to touch on Japanese culture. My goal is to create Koinobori, carp flags which are used to celebrate Children's Day on May 5th. I started out our unit learning about the famous art print by Hokusai, The Great Wave. Students also were taught some Kanji characters. We made origami Samurai hats. I also included a fish pinch pot lesson. Susan Samurai Kanji The Great Wave Fish Pinch Pots
St Paul's Art Show took place this past spring in March. It was a well attended event. The bake sale, raffle, and freewill donations have supported my program this coming school year and allowed me to purchase much needed supplies and materials for our new school year. Our school gymnasium was packed with attendees, students, parents, family, and friends. It was a fun night. Some students used the looms threaded for our art classes to show their family how awesome weaving is! There were many displays for our different units in art the 2022-23 school year. We focused on Picasso, Still life, mythical creatures, weaving, Wayne Theibaud, Van Gogh, perspective, Kandinsky, color, and line, just to name a few! ![]() ![]() Attendees were encouraged to vote for People's Choice. Our staff voted on art show categories. And the winners are.... Winning work was displayed in our Church gathering space for the month of April.
Students in grades kindergarten through second were shown landscapes painted by Vincent Van Gogh. We took pieces of chip board and made "paintings" with modeling clay. It was a workout with small hands, but the students were really into making their landscapes after they realized all the potential that modeling clay has. Mixing, making texture, and movement.
Students created a creature with at least three features of another animal or creature. After drawing and writing about their creature students created a three dimensional version of their creature in paper mache. We looked to the artist Roberto Benavidez.
Fourth grade students created a creature with at least three characteristics of living animals/creatures. Student first drew their creature and then wrote about their creature. This final project gave them an opportunity to try sewing. students embraced this new skill.
These shadow boxes will be available for raffle at our art show the evening of March 24th, 6pm. These shadow boxes are a collaboration with our school students, secretary, and myself. They are created to fundraise for our art program at St Paul's Lutheran School.
In early January 2023 I began the huge endeavor of threading seven looms with seven yards of warp. This project was going to involve a school-wide effort to have every student weave on a loom. The end product is still to be determined. Each loom is threaded with a color; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and black and woven will the same color weft. ![]() Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade really enjoy the hands on experience of making cloth. They like the activity of making something with their hands and a machine. They like switching the treadles, throwing the shuttle, and beating the beater. Students worked in pairs. We kept edges loose, to keep the width of the weaving the widest. (Good for constructing the larger collaborative piece) Updates later as we have about five more yards to go!!
